Write-up: Information has been received from a physician concerning a patient who on unspecified date was vaccinated with a dose of ROTATEQ (Lot # and expiration not reported). Physician reported that on unspecified date the patient developed intussusception after receiving ROTATEQ. The patient did not seek medical attention. At the time of reporting the patient was recovering. Upon internal review, intussusception was determined to be an other important medical event. This is one of several reports from the same source. Additional information has been requested.

The nurse reported that on an unspecified date, the mother of the child informed her that after her son received the ROTATEQ, he was diagnosed with intussusception and was hospitalized. At the time of the report, the patient''s outcome was unknown. Additional information has been requested.

Write-up: 5/7/11 p.m., infant had emesis x 3, diarrhea x 1 with a "small amount" of blood in stool. No fever or other symptoms. Seen at local ER, ultrasound showed intussuception. Transferred to Pediatric ER. Admitted; air enema successfully reduced intussuception. Kept npo overnight with IV fluids. Discharged 5/10/11 in good health. This is per admitting hospital''s record and report from mother at 7/22/11 visit with Pediatrician.

Write-up: Pt given ROTATEQ #1 on 7/20/11 at 2 mo old checkup. Developed vomiting on 8/15/11. Seen at urgent care on 8/16/11. Returned to urgent care on 8/18/11 and was admitted for bloody stool. Developed bilious vomiting on 8/19/11. UGI study abnormal. Transferred to another Hospital on 8/19/11 and had surgery that evening for intussusception. Stool for Rotavirus negative. Stool for enteric pathogens negative.

Diagnostic Lab Data: RAD: acute abd min 2 view with PA CXR Finding - air filled distended loops of small bowel consistent with small bowel obstruction US Abd: Findings - 1) dilated loops what appear to be small bowel, concern for high grade bowel obstruction 2) moderate free fluid which is nonspecific finding. No evidence of focal complex fluid collections to suggest abscess formation 3) no evidence of ileocolic intussusception
CDC Split Type:

Write-up: 4 days after vaccination, patient was brought to ED after one-day of several episodes of vomiting. Last bowel movement was approximately 24 hours prior to presentation to the hospital. A barium enema revealed blockage; patient sent to operating room immediately. Laporascopic exploration discovered ilean intussusception. 10 cm was resected and both ends re-anastomased. Patient hospital stay complicated by an intra-abdominal infection which responded piperacillin/tazobactam. Patient was discharged from hospital on 08/05/2011 to home with parents.
